Kids Power Conference
The conference was held on Thursday November 7th, 2013, and brought together 100 students in grades 6 and 7 from both the Thames Valley District School Board and the London District Catholic School Board that have been identified as leaders by their teachers and peers. Through a series of workshops these students developed their leadership skills and were inspired to bring back positive initiatives at their own schools and communities.
Our presentation was based on the Design for Change concept, a global movement that empowers children to be the change they wish to see in this world. Founded by Kiran Bir Sethi, of the Riverside School in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, this movement has spread to over 35 countries and empowered over 25 million children to say "I can!"
Based on a simplified design thinking process, the Design for Change initiative asks students to FEEL any problems that bother them (or others) within their school or neighbourhood. Once the problem is identified, students IMAGINE a way to make the situation better. Ideas which are easy to replicate, result in long lasting change and impact the largest number of people are given preference. Now students are able to DO an act of change! Through planning, implementing and recording their processes, the kids are truly empowered to make a difference. Finally, the students get to SHARE their story of change with the world, through social media, local press, the Design For Change website and more!
